The industry name of MTHFR revealed!
Oh yes, when I was first introduced to the MTHFR Gene, the name that the Practitioner used was so appropriate I almost wet my pants. For all the suffering that this one chemical reaction in a metabolic pathway in the body can cause, in my opinion there’s no name more suitable than it’s coined Mother F*#ker Gene.
In our industry, and my family, we joke that MTHFR Gene is an abbreviation of Mother F*&ker. Now I know, I personally know, that if you have the MTHFR and you’re not optimized, therefore showing one of many symptoms, or even serious conditions; it’s definitely not a laughing matter. For us it’s a way to see the humor in an otherwise not so funny topic.
I originally found out about MTHFR years ago, on a personal health journey. I had been investigating like an FBI Agent, trying to work out what was wrong with me. My 10 year investigation took me all the way to studying to be a Naturopath, Nutritionist and Herbalist, to find out more about my body and be able to help others who may be having the same struggles. Now almost 10 years after I made that choice to learn more, the gene that drove me there is my main driver to support others.
With a family history of Thyroid Conditions, Addictions, Cardiovascular Disease and Asthma, we present with a range of what an expressed MTHFR Polymorphism can do. I am now incredibly grateful for my struggle which started as a child with Severe Chronic Asthma, led into my 20’s with Depression and ultimately an eating disorder which ruled my thoughts. It has allowed me to discover how to help, not only my clients, but my family. As we know the MTHFR is a genetic polymorphism which can be passed down for generations, and our family was hit hard.
At family dinners, there is always the odd joke blaming some action on the Mother F*#ker, and I have a little chuckle, along with a moment of gratitude for the knowledge we now have.
Just to be clear, MTHFR does not stand for Mother F*#ker. It is an abbreviation of methylene-tetrahydrofolate reductase. An enzyme that converts folate to the active form that is used by the body in the Methylation Cycle. No laughing matter :). Hi Michelle!
Ok great. It’s important that we do the right Profile test, it’s not as easy as just testing the one SNP (Gene Mutation). The Methylation Profile Test which is most common, I can do a referral at our local pathology. It’s $142.95 if you pay there, or I can pass on my discount to you if you pay here and it will be $121.55. Let’s get an appointment locked in, I’m booked up for the next couple of weeks, Have appointments available on the 19th March or the 22nd. Let me know what works.
